Safety Concerns for Fixed Vertical Ladders

Schedule an Onsite Inspection with S3 Technicians

Falls are the number one cause of fatalities at work.

There are more than 300 ladder-related deaths and over 130,000 emergency room visits related to ladders each year, as well as 2,000 ladder-related injuries every day.1

Given the statistics, it's no surprise that authorities frequently update Fall Protection Standards.

For example, vertical ladder cages used to be standard practice, but OSHA now mandates that they must be removed by 2036.

Owners of ladders in WA state must comply with both federal OSHA requirements 1910.23 and the local Washington Administrative Code standards chapter 296-876 WAC.

It is critical that your site is compliant with current codes, and - most importantly - in safe working condition.

How to Improve Ladder Conditions

Generally speaking, most ladders will benefit from the following:

  • Updated fixed ladder design and ergonomics
  • Design improvements entering and exiting of ladder way
  • Wider rungs
  • Proper clearance behind /around
  • Safety treads
  • Extended transition point
  • Lower ladder "docks"

However, one size does not fit all. Safety is very situational, and solutions must be adapted to environmental and working conditions.

For example, S3 had to specially construct these ladders out of lightweight, non-conductive material.
